THE IMPORTANCE
OF WATERSHEDS
Water
makes part of the environment, therefore its conservation and proper use
are fundamental in order to assure life in our planet.
Some
facts about water:
-
It's a natural resource
-
Unique
-
Scarce
-
Essential to life
-
Its distributed unevenly throughout the planet
-
Only 0.0067% of all water in the world is
available for human usage.
From
this percentage, only a fraction is in condition of being used.
Because
of these facts, the subject of managing and preserving watersheds is of
utter importance. A watershed is a territory, a microcosmos bound by nature
itself. Its limits are the waterways that converge all to one spot.
Watersheds,
its natural resources (animal, plants and soil) and social groups have
different biological, social, economical and cultural characteristics that
make possible tailoring and organizing its management having in mind its
characteristics and identity.
